UNICOS Framework Implementation

UNICOS was born at CERN in early 2001 with the development of the LHC cryogenics control system. It deals with the two upper layers of a classical control system: Supervision and Control. UNICOS proposes a method to design and develop the control application which will run in commercial off-the-shelf products (e.g. SCADA and PLCs).

A glimpse at the new UNICOS HMI:

Let's go through the process of redesigning one panel

Step:1 Analyzing old panel

The first step in the redesign process is to align panels with the UNICOS’s updated branding guidelines. This involves incorporating consistent visual elements such as colors, fonts, and icons, ensuring that the panel not only functions well but also reinforces the brand's identity.

Step:2 Redesigning Panels using brand guidelines

Step:2 Incorporating styling in WinCC OA using Control Script

Since WINCC OA is not a design tool hence, to overcome the limitations of WINCC OA and to implement the necessary visual enhancements, QT CSS, a style sheet language tailored for QT applications was used.

Testing and Deployment - 2 months long campaign

My role primarily involves addressing JIRA issues—typically minor bugs that were overlooked or overwritten during the redesign—and implementing UI enhancements based on the recommended changes, as illustrated in following screenshots.

Problems reported are both:

i- Technical - Functionality oriented
ii- Design Oriented

Additional functionality - Dark mode of UNICOS:

I also implementing dark mode for UNICOS, allowing users to seamlessly switch between light and dark modes via the HMI. This process includes designing a color database, theme specific icons, and optimizing the code for a smooth user experience.
